Partnership with Pyrex

With my Unit I would like to set up a cellule of research to investigate the idea of the 'Culture' of objects and they can become witnesses of a society. With the premiss that creation is a symbiose of the cerebral, the emotional, and the instinctive; I will encourage the students to articulate these aspects of conception. Technologies and materials undergo constant evolution and my unit will navigate through numerical investigations to tangible materials research to develop new typologies and constructs. I will discuss with the students the idea that our material and immaterial world is imbued with conventions and need scrutinising wth a 'fresh eye'.

This semester I will be following a project with the company Pyrex.

I will commence with an analysis of the company and its position in the market place. The name Pyrex is synonym with the heat proof glass but is less well known for products using other materials . This study will be to develop a range of products to enlarge the potential of the company using either cast iron, coated aluminium, stainless steel taking into account the cooking qualities and particularities of a material and exploring new avenues of use in food preparation or presentation . The students will investigate the overall kitchen cycle from cooking, cleaning, and storage.

Pedagogy

While working on each project the students will build a evolving environnement around them; it will be a constant reference and contain tangible materials, objects, details through to more abstract elements like colours, textures, arborescent use systems etc...

Regular 'round tables' between the students combined with individual discussions will encourage an on-going development of the projects.
