The EDF sustainable - Design challenge / Hi tech low tech - récupération, recycling, réarticulation, réinvention
09/2010PROJECT ONE
THE EDF SUSTAINABLE
DESIGN CHALLENGE
“Changing energy together for better living”
in collaboration with the French Design Promotion Association, APCI.
To “change energy for better living” raises the question of how we all can contribute to the development of a harmonious sustainable society, by rethinking the use and production of energy.
Beyond products, processes and services, the challenge is to support research & innovation on new day to day energy efficient solutions and to deliver objects and devices to the general public.
This competition will run through the entire semester and be structured with teams of 3-4 students for each group.
PROJECT TWO
HI TECH LOW TECH
RECUPERATION RECYCLING REARTICULATION REINVENTION
There is an ever-growing need to have homegrown, localized small manufacturing entities to recycle and produce objects while recuperating materials, transforming them into new base materials; and with minimum tooling create a whole variety of objects.
HEDERA TECH is a company who are developing low cost, low energy servers using small versatile computer processors rather than very high energy consuming components used in existing servers. allied with this objective is the idea is to create a carcass using recycled materials.
This project is a multi layered exploration into the generation of an object.
Initial phase – Choice and recuperation
Is to chose and recuperate different objects in quantity for there potential material capacities.
2nd phase - Materials Design
These elements will be analyzed and undergo physical transformation to be prepared for a new use. There will be a substantial materials design phase to obtain a new structural integrity which can be articulated and assembled into an object. This phase will be crucial and time will be spent developing and experimenting to obtain materials with sufficient inherent structural stability as to be applied as the base component material for the server housing.
3rd phase - design
design and fabrication of objects of which one example could be the server carcass respecting the functional constraints.... housing, component emplacement, ventilation, cabling and integration of solar panels. The objective is arrive at fully functional propositions with a tooling and assembly manual. these design experiences can be communicated to the small manufacturing units.
PROJECT THREE
EXQUISITE SKETCHES
What if two types of object meet together, combine, fuze, collide, and generate a third?
What if molten wax was poured into a vat of cold water from 5 meters, what object does this generate?
What if a pot of paint was thrown through the air and frozen in time, what form would that generate.
The project is in relation with the press office Natkin and will investigate the creation of an object by inventing processes and adventures and putting them into action. Actions, either passive or violent, can be the generators of an or series of objects which can re-articulate existing, coded typologies. One has to be prepared to eject all accepted design tools and recreate new methods of object genesis.
Projects Two and Three will be parallel subjects which they will develop along side Project 1; each student will choose either project Two or Three to be their parallel subject.
