Context –the context in which the designer operates – is a configuration which is different for each project. It is an interlacing of cultural, technological, sociological, economic, legal, political and even philosophical questions which are organised according to the type of production envisaged: object or area, for public or private purposes, with a commercial life or relating to society, innovation or continuity, use or message. This interlacing is all the more difficult to grasp in that design is not only concerned with creation but also with negotiation between many authorities and partners, an art which can be described as “the art of interactivity,” where it is not just the motor for new technology in communication but also the vista of the great global market and forms of democracy to come. Ensci has put together a syllabus which will enable students to interpret the complexity of the world today and provide them with the means to confront a society which is undergoing profound change. However, there are always things in the pipeline as far as the syllabus is concerned, and this must remain so, for although some questions can be tackled with constituted knowledge and traditional methods, many are just beginning to emerge. These are the forward-looking questions and the means of acquiring them change from one discipline to another; understanding what is to come is like a ship looking for a break in the clouds and can come as much from intuitive adventures in art as from methodical explorations of science, be it the humanities and social sciences or the so-called “hard” sciences, basic research or applied research. The syllabus in the field of Context is therefore continually evolving, so that, depending on current pertinent knowledge available, it can add in contributions from new disciplines.
