EXCHANGE STUDENT - INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

APPLICATION GUIDELINE & GENERAL INFO

Selection, integration and tutoring are the responsibility of the Studio international.

TO APPLY, please contact Liz Davis, Academic Advisor in charge of international relations and projects, or Michèle Collange, assistant. Liz Davis is also the study tutor for foreign students. (davis(at)ensci.com and michele.collange(at)ensci.com)

We offer an exchange programme each semester. Application deadlines are: May 1st for the first semester, and November 1st for the second semester.

Tuition is free but of course an exchange does not lead to any diploma.

ENSCI-Les Ateliers offers a generalist (industrial) design education. This includes a very varied range of project experiences, including service design, digital design, etc…

Application is very competitive as we have many ongoing exchange partnerships with schools throughout the world. We take around 13 exchange students each semester (twice a year) for 6 months in the school. 40% of these students are pre-selected from the MEDes. programme (Master in European Design studies).

You must apply as a student from one of our partner schools or universities and follow the accepted procedure at your home institution. In very rare cases (i.e. countries with very little design education infrastructure) we can study the possibility of creating a new exchange programme.

To apply you have to fill out the on-line application form and to send us the following documents before the deadline:

  • Confirmation of your application from your sending institution
  • Paper portfolio and CD / USB memory stick
  • Letter of motivation
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • French examination score (if applicable)

Please send a motivation letter (not a formal letter - some personal writing about who you are, why you want to come to France/Les Ateliers, what is your particular interest in design…) with some work examples (Macintosh-friendly digital documents are OK but we also expect you to send a paper folio).

You obviously need to be very motivated, and to be willing to work and communicate in French. Although we now have an English-speaking project studio and tutorial support is available in English, almost everything at ENSCI-Les Ateliers happens in French. For a meaningful exchange period it is essential to arrive with a basic working knowledge of the language.

Contact your local Alliance Française or French Embassy if you need help with language lessons and for information about bursaries and visas.

Please note

  • we do not have student accommodation but we help students find appropriate housing.
  • as mentioned above, there is no tuition fee but :
    • in all cases you will have to pay for Third Party insurance cover (public liability). Such insurance is usually included in your medical insurance or in your apartment insurance (cost is around 15€)
    • if you are under 28 and if your home institution is not in the EU : you will have to pay the French Social Security contribution (National Health System) which is around 200 € per year. This contribution is mandatory even if you already have medical insurance.

This above info is for Exchange students only.

We remind you that ENSCI-Les Ateliers accepts regular students of ALL nationalities. If you wish to apply as a REGULAR student, please see the Admission section and take note of the following:

  • we accept English-speaking candidates with a Bachelor level degree (category III). A special English-speaking jury treats these applications. Successful candidates will spend their first semester in an English-speaking project studio while following a customised French language programme (cost details to follow). After this first semester students enter the normal French study track – but their programme is extended to three and a half years.
  • for students not wishing to extend their study programme and feeling sufficiently confident in French (to participate in the selection day (« admissibilité ») you will need to understand instructions in French and to explain your ideas) it is essential to demonstrate your motivation to learn the French language at a level which will allow you to follow academic courses if you are accepted.
