THE PRACTICAL FORMS WORKSHOP

Project Leader: Jean-François Dingjian
Assistant Designer: Laurent Greslin
Workshop Coordinator: Valérie Druet

POSITIONING

Working towards a contextual approach to design. This workshop takes the order and its associated constraints as the starting point for object design. This method applies to every type of project, whether industrial or not, and aims to control each phase of the design project by taking the order as the basis for delivering a thought process and distinctive project culture. So, of course, it is not a space for simulating the realities of an industrial design agency, but rather a space for thought in which students discover and refine their own methodology through form.

TEACHING

The central concept addressed by this workshop is using design as a tool for shaping thought. We use the word ‘form’ to describe the interactions between usefulness, three-dimensionality and production. All available design tools are used, but primarily drawn images, which provide a direct and efficient interface between idea and practical materialisation. Naturally, the issue of three-dimensionality will be addressed through a process of questioning forms, their history and their motivations.
